“Visi mani sauc par Maksi, bet es oficiāli neesmu Maksis,” viņš saka, “Pasē man rakstīts cits vārds.” Pēc kāda laika viņa dokumentos būšot rakstīts Maksimilians, jo šis vārds Maksim Kotovičam patīk vislabāk. Kaņepes Kultūras centrā viņš “rada vizuālo pieredzi ap mūziku”, strādājot pie gaismas dizaina, dekorējot skatuvi, domājot par scenogrāfiju. 19. maija vakarā KKc Zilajā zālē notiks Berlin Sessions in Riga // DJ vakars // Iza Minelli otrais pasākums. Uz jautājumu, kāda būs viņa loma tajā, Maksis atbild: “Es padarīšu Zilo zāli vēl skaistāku.”
– Kā tu pirmoreiz nokļuvi KKc, tu atceries?
– Tas nebija pārāk sen. Abos līdzšinējos Komētas festivālos es strādāju kā fotogrāfs. Pēc otrās Komētas Marcipāns (Marta Lortkipanidze) man uzdeva tādu jautājumu: “Hei, vai Tu nevēlies Kaņepē fotografēt koncertus?” Tas bija pagājušajā vasarā. Pirms tam es te biju bijis tikai pāris reizes. Tā nu es ierados Kaņepē, lai fotografētu koncertus. Un bija viens koncerts, kurā man ļoti nepatika, kā izskatās skatuve; man nepatika gaismas. Es biju ļoti dusmīgs, jo nevarēju uztaisīt smuku bildi. Mūziķu sejas bija dzeltenīgas un sarkanīgas kā kaut kādiem multeņu briesmoņiem. Es tā ļoti uzmanīgi centos mazliet pakustināt lampiņas un mainīt kaut kādas krāsas, lai tiktu pie labām bildēm, un tā pavisam nejauši mana darbošanās šeit no fotografēšanas Kaņepē pārvērtās par gaismošanu Kaņepē. Tas viss notika ļoti ātri. Ap Ziemassvētkiem es attapos, ka šeit strādāju.
– Kā tu sajūti šo vietu?
– Es zinu, ka tā ir ļoti neorģināla atbilde, esmu to redzējis jau iepriekšējās intervijās – daudzi no maniem kolēģiem sauc šo vietu par otrajām mājām. Es KKc pat varētu saukt par savām pirmajām mājām. Man, protams, ir dzīvoklis, es neesmu bezpajumtnieks.
Kaņepe ir pirmā platforma, kas man ir ļāvusi izpausties radoši. Bērnībā es apguvu mākslu, bet man nekad nav bijusi vieta, kur īstenot savas idejas. Kaņepe ir šī vieta. Kaņepe ir mans molberts.
– Kā tu gribētu, lai cilvēki tevi atceras, kad tu būsi jau citā dimensijā?
– (Ilgi domā) Es diez ko nedomāju un nefantazēju par to, kāds es būšu pēc pieciem vai piecdesmit gadiem. Līdz ar to, ja tu jautā, kā es gribu, lai cilvēki mani atceras, man ir diezgan vienalga. Es esmu sev iemācījis pārāk nefokusēties uz to, ko domā citi cilvēki. Man arī nav prātā kaut kāds “imidžs”, ko es vēlētos parādīt citiem cilvēkiem.
– Kāda būtu tava ideālā pasaule?
– Man prātā nāk dažādi aspekti, kas piemistu šai ideālajai pasaulei. Viens no tiem būtu tāds – šajā pasaulē nebūtu reliģijas. Un ideālajā pasaulē cilvēki dzīvotu saskaņā ar to ideoloģiju, ar kuru mēs dzīvojam Kaņepē.
– Kā šī ideoloģija izpaužas?
– To var izlasīt pirmajā stāvā, uz lapas pie bāra letes. Bet, ja īsumā – es ideālo pasauli redzu kā vietu, kur ikvienam ir iespēja izpausties. Kur tev ir tiesības tiekties pēc tā, ko tieši tu vēlies darīt, nevis darīt to, ko kāds cits vēlas, lai tu dari.
– Ja tu šodien uzzinātu, ka tev ir atlikušas vairs tikai trīs dienas, ko dzīvot, kā tu tās pavadītu?
– Kolēģiem nopirktu batutu un nāktu uz KKc.

“Everybody just calls me Maksis, but that is not my real name” he says, “My passport says differently right now, but one day it will say Maksimilians.” He is in charge of lighting and the visual experience around live music in Kaņepes Kultūras centrs. On the evening of the 19th of May, KKc is hosting the second event of Berlin Sessions in Riga // DJ vakars // Iza Minelli. When asked about what his role in Berlin sessions will be, he responds: “I will make the blue hall even more beautiful.”
– Do you remember the first time you visited KKc?
It wasn’t too long ago. I was taking a lot of photos during the first two Komēta festivals. Not too long after the second Komēta, Marcipāns (Marta Lortkipanidze) asked me about taking photos of concerts and musicians in KKc. I jumped on board immediately. That was last summer. Before that, I had only been here once or twice, actually. So there I was, taking photos in KKc. I remember one particular concert. I did not like the layout of the stage as well as the lighting. I was not happy at all, because i could not take a good photo. The faces of the musicians were lit bright yellow and red, like the ones of some cartoon figures. I took matters into my own hands and started to move around the lights ever so slightly. I started getting better photos, but my ambitions in KKc changed right away from taking photos to working as a lighting designer. It all happened very fast, and around Christmas, I realised that i work here now.
– How do you feel about this place?
– I know this is not an original answer, and i’ve seen it in previous interviews – a lot of my colleagues call this place their second home. I could even call KKc my real home. Of course I have a flat, i’m not homeless.
When I was younger, I studied art, but never had a place or platform to make my ideas and visions come to life. KKc is that platform. KKc is my drawing board.
– How would you like to be remembered, after you travel to a different dimension?
– (silence) I don’t think or fantasise about what kind of a person i’m going to be in five or fifty years time. So, if you’re asking me, how I want to be remembered by other people, I don’t really care. I don’t have a self-image in my head, that i’d like other people to see.
– What would your perfect world be like?
– There are a lot of aspects that would make up my perfect world. One of them would be a world without religion. Perhaps, in this ideal world, people would live by the same ideologies, that we live by in KKc.
– What exactly is this ideology?
– You can read about this ideology in our code of ethics, on the wall, next to the first floor bar. I envision the perfect world as a place where everyone has an opportunity to express themselves. A place where you have the right to create and do exactly what you want to do, not something that someone else might want you to do.
– If you suddenly found out that you only have three days left to live, how would you spend them?
– I would buy a trampoline for my colleagues and come to KKc.
